14 core and cross-appointed faculty members receive national research funding

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced yesterday funding for over 350 U of T scientists to pursue vital research and graduate training. Fourteen core and cross-appointed IBBME faculty members were named grant recipients.
Federal Minster of State (Transport) Stephen Fletcher and Member of Parliament Mark Adler (York Centre) were present for the announcement, made July 27 in the Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.
The funds are made available through NSERC’s Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, Postgraduate Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships programs. U of T researchers received a total 388 awards, representing $42 million in funding.
NSERC awards Discovery Grants to ongoing research programs, giving researchers the freedom to structure their program to best benefit their area of inquiry. IBBME research projects funded by these grants are diverse, from developing computer models of electrical activities in neurons ( Berj Bardakjian), to assistive technologies that respond to emotion in patients (Elaine Biddiss).
Milos Popovic, core IBBME faculty, was on hand at the announcement to showcase his Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) therapy, which uses neuroprosthetic devices to restore motor function in spinal cord injury and stroke patients. Popovic’s research shows promising results for restoring grasping function, and this technology will be moving forward through the commercialization process toward therapeutic application in Toronto, Montreal and Fredricton within a year. Popovic’s Discovery grant and Discovery Accelerator Supplement will fund research into restoring standing, a much more complex function than grasping.
“This funding is critical to our research,” stated Popovic. “It also ensures we get the very best graduate students, because we are giving them tasks with no solution. We’re investigating high-risk technology, and we are often surprised by what we find in our experiments. NSERC Discovery grants give researchers the freedom to follow those surprises, to ‘experiment within the experiment’.”
Six IBBME core professors received grants for groundbreaking research:
Berj Bardakjian: Computer models of the electrical activities in hippocampal neurons
Elaine Biddiss: Emotion-aware assistive technologies in rehabilitation and healthcare
Moshe Eizenman: Eye tracking systems
Milos Popvic: MR Neuroprosthesis for restoring quiet stance and balance during quit stances in individuals with spinal cord injury
Craig Simmons : Heart valve cell and matrix biomechanics and mechanobiology
William Stanford: Systems biology driven tissue engineering
Several of IBBME’s many cross-appointed faculty also received grants:
Andreas Mandelis (MIE): Ultrasonic (US) imager for enhanced resolution, contrast and fast patient screening via co-registration with photoacoustic-radar tomographic (PART) imaging of breast cancer
Radhakrishnan Mahadevan (ChemE): High throughput culturing system for evolutionary engineering and Multi-scale genome-based modeling of human metabolism for diagnostic and therapeutic applications
Andrew Avi Goldenberg (MIE): Multi-modal modularity of mobile robots
Shana Kelley (Pharmacy): Nanotextured microstructures for biosensing
Alison McGuigan (ChemE): Tool kit for quantifying gene expression
Hani Naguib (MIE): New insights into polymer blends, foams, and composites by AFM imaging
Yu Sun (MIE): A high-speed camera and voltage sequencer for mechanical characterization and isolation of cancer cells
Cari Whyne (Surgery): Multi-resolution modeling of thin bone structures in the human skeleton
